WOOOOHOOOO!!!! Great news - 'Elements' got picked for the 'Fabric of the Land' Exhibition! I'm so excited!!!

The email said: "In the end we had 200 entries which the selection panel took down to 70. The selection panel were very impressed with the quality of the submissions this year which made their job difficult to judge and they were very specific about the choices."

Ha!! Mine is one of them!!! :))

Fabric of the Land

Went to Edinburgh on Friday to drop off my entries for the 'Fabric of the Land' Exhibition.

Fabric of the Land is an exhibition by the Geology & Petroleum Geology Department at the University of Aberdeen. It explores links between art and science and held its first exhibition in 2009. The judging panel met today to decide what is going to be included, so fingers crossed.

This year the theme is 'Elements'; a word with many meanings as illustrated by several from the Oxford English Dictionary.

1. A component part; a contributing factor or thing.
2. Any substance that cannot be resolved into a simpler substance by chemical means.
3. Any of the four substances (earth, air, fire and water) in ancient and medieval philosophy.
4. Atmospheric agencies especially wind and storm.
5. The rudiments of learning or a branch of knowledge.

The brief encourages emerging and established artists to submit artworks that consider the ‘elements’ within the environment and landscape from a geological perspective.

The photos above only give you the 2-D picture image but they are 3-D. Below are some more photos to try and give you some perspective. I love playing with the optical illusions of these and really want to do some more. I didn't do so much turning on the back this time as I did with the first one. It's like working in 4 dimensions when trying to figure out how to get the 2-D/3-D effect that I'm looking for! Working out what to turn when can numb the brain a bit, and it's not until the wood is actually on the lathe and I start painting and staining that I know for sure what I'm going to end up with!

Turning in Sycamore - Elements

This is my first blog on my newly published website!!! Woooohoooo!!!

I finally decided to go for it after being very sensible and doing my homework and being very pedantic and putting it off. Self-employment...

Now I've really got to get focussed and produce more work. The past couple of days I've been cutting and preparing some logs for getting some bowls and tea-lights turned. Trying to finish off two separate artworks. One is a bowl that I did a bit of painting on. I am donating it to the Cumbernauld TKD club that I am a member of, Grandmaster Loh's TTA, for fundraising. The other is a new wall plaque. I will get some new photos up of these soon.

The photos I'm posting are of my first wall plaque I completed in March. It was exhibited in Cumbernauld Theatre bar during the International Women's Day festival. I have entered this and the new one into the Fabric of the Land exhibition to be held in Aberdeen for three weeks from the end of August - more about this another time.
